TOTEM OUTSIDE IN, 2016
This work is a critical reflection on the popularity of the inside things we use to “connect” us to the outside world. The totem pays homage to our sacred Earth through a lifecycle of the elements while its man-made composition simultaneously disconnects us. Composed of found objects - Chafing Dish, Incense, Fan, Humidifier, Fountain, Clay, Plastic Plant, and Ash - this totem emulates a transition through the elements:
Fire / Fire + Air = Smoke / Air / Air + Water = Mist / Water / Water + Earth = Clay / Earth / Earth + Fire = Ash / Then back to Fire.
